Member Profile: Gary R. Burroughs
Deputy City Administrator, City of Yuma

Where are you originally from?
I enjoyed life as a farmer in Northeast Arkansas in the small rural town of Manila. School, hard work, hunting and fishing were my typical activities.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in local government?
I had the honor and privilege of serving over 20 years in the United States Army in the Corps of Engineers branch in both Combat and Construction Engineering positions. During my time in Engineer Districts to include serving as Commander and District Engineer, Albuquerque District, I enjoyed working closely with communities throughout New Mexico, Colorado and Texas. I gained a lot of respect for these leaders and always felt that working in local government would be challenging and personally satisfying. I was right!

What do you like most about your job?
I like the people. I am very happy working with a dedicated and enthusiastic staff and as a team, solving problems for our community in order to improve the quality of life of our citizens.

What areas of local government interest you the most?
Since my background is in engineering and construction, I naturally enjoy the public works and planning functions of government; however you have to fund these activities so I continue to learn from our Director of Finance.

As a local government professional, what accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am very proud of the work my staff has done in sustaining a high level of quality service during this time of tremendous growth.

What was the last book you read?
Thanks to a recently implemented City training program, I have completed readings associated with the management author, Dr. Edward de Bono, Six Thinking Hats, and find them to be thought provoking.
