ASU and League Offer Ninth Annual Newly Elected Officials Orientation
Arizona State University in partnership with the League of Arizona Cities and Towns are hosting the ninth annual orientation program for newly elected municipal officials Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10 at the ASU Downtown Center in Phoenix.
The purpose of the program is to assist newly elected officials in being more effective in their new policy-making role. The program will be similar to that offered last year and provides participants with an opportunity to:
    Learn the basics of municipal government in Arizona;
    Review Arizona government structure;
    Learn about the general issues of municipal budgeting;
    Discuss ethical and legal issues facing elected officials; and
    Review the public policy process
The program will provide an opportunity for newly elected officials to receive general background information about municipal government in Arizona. As the same time, the program will also serve as a forum for elected officials to interact with one another and build a network of contacts around the state for the future.
This program, offered for the first time in 1998, was developed in response to needs expressed by elected officials and city managers from around the state. To date, we have had over 450 newly elected officials from more than 80 cities and towns around Arizona participate. Since the program is so popular, we encourage you to reserve space for your newly elected officials as soon as possible. Due to space limitations, we will not be able to accommodate city managers, city staff or other guests.
Please encourage your newly elected officials to participate in the program. The cost of the program is $150 per person (includes meals and materials). A very limited number of reduced rate registrations may be available under certain circumstances. ASU and the League are not-for-profit institutions and that the fees charged are used to cover the costs of the program. However, in the interest of having as many elected officials as possible attend, the League is willing to work with communities to accommodate any special needs that they might have.
If you have questions about registration costs, please contact Matt Lore at (602) 258-5786 or Registration material may be downloaded from the League website. The registration deadline is Friday, May 26, 2006.
