Member Profile: George Pettit
City Manager, Town of Gilbert

Where are you originally from?
Was born and raised in Colorado, attending the University of Colorado. Went to Des Moines, Iowa to start my local government career -- a brief stint in private sector in Boulder, Colorado -- then here in Gilbert since July 1985.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in local government?
I had started in University administration, but wanted to get in to local government, where life seemed simpler and the results more rewarding.
What do you like most about your job?
Every day is a new day, particularly in Gilbert where you have an opportunity to grow an organization, as well as a community.
What areas of local government interest you the most?
I love it all. Some people think the financial side is my strong suit, and frankly given over 30 years in public employment, that's generally where the arguments and solutions are found. But the ability to view a big picture and organize in a modern view as we grow has been the most rewarding lately. The friendships, open sharing and support in Arizona by all the managers and staffs is especially rewarding.
As a local government professional, what accomplishment are you most proud of?
As Kent Cooper phrased it and taught me, the need to improvise and develop partnerships to make things happen. Public partnerships -- private partnerships -- being open to opportunities to achieve a better result for the community.
What are your hobbies?
My hobbies include landscaping around the house (another adventure in immediate results that also has long term implications) -- and anyone who plays golf with me would definitely classify my level of commitment as hobby.
