Member Profile: Marnie Schubert
Division Manager, Communications & Marketing
Town of Queen Creek

Where are you originally from?
Although I was born in Florida, my father was in the U.S. Navy, which meant I grew up moving every year or so to different states and countries. I've lived on both the East and West coasts of the U.S., as well as in Great Britain and Germany. I moved to Arizona about four months ago from Central Florida where "it's not the heat, it's the humidity!"

Why did you decide to pursue a career in local government?
Local government is exciting because it affects every member of a community. Residents can speak their opinions and make a direct impact on the decisions of community leaders. Although that level of accessibility can sometimes be challenging, it's also what makes local government so important. I enjoy working in an environment where I can be a positive influence on a community.

What do you like most about your job?
I like that every day is completely different from the day before. One minute I'll be coordinating a community outreach campaign for an upcoming anti-dust initiative, and the next I'm planning an Ice Cream Social for Town residents. It keeps me on my toes and allows me to stretch my creative muscles.

What areas of local government interest you the most?
I really enjoy the communication aspect of local government - taking complex issues and making them relatable to residents. There are so many voices that need to be heard, and it's exciting to be a part of joining them together to create a message.

As a local government professional, what accomplishment are you most proud of?
One of my recent achievements was the launch of broadcasting Queen Creek's Town Council meetings. The community has grown exponentially over the past few years, and this conversion to the Web and local cable marks a huge milestone for the Town. I'm proud of any opportunity I have to help residents gain access to local government and understand how the decisions of community leaders directly affect them.

What are your hobbies?
I've used painting as a stress-relieving hobby for years. I paint landscapes and portraits although, based on my skill level, I should probably just stick to painting the walls of my home! I like the immediate difference that a splash of color can have on my mood, and I'm fortunate to have a supportive husband who tells me that my paintings are beautiful - even though they probably look like a kindergartener has gone wild with finger paint!
