ACMA presented this year's Associate's Award for Excellence in
Leadership to Dr. Denhardt, Director of the ASU School of Public
Affairs and the ASU Lincoln Professor of Leadership and Ethics.
This award is specifically designed to recognize associate members
who contribute to the profession through their organization at an
associate member rather than the CEO level.
Dr. Denhardt has dedicated his life and career to teaching, researching,
and writing about leadership in public service. He is an internationally
known speaker on the subject and is a past national president of the
American Society for Public Administration.
Locally, Bob was the driving force for the establishment of two key
programs in the Valley: the Marvin Andrews Graduate Program in Urban
Management at ASU, and the Alliance for Innovation, headquartered at
ASU's downtown campus. The three-year-old Marvin Andrews Program
attracts the country's most talented students aspiring to executive
levels in local government. At the program's core is a strong partnership
with ACMA that offers funding, internships and mentoring to students.
The ACMA partnership and Bob's work as Director have in large part
contributed to the program's impressive ranking - it's the number six
urban management program in the country, according to U.S. News and
Additionally, under Dr. Denhardt's leadership, the School of Public
Affairs bested more than 200 schools to bring the Alliance for Innovation's
new headquarters to Phoenix. He currently sits on its Board of Directors,
assisting with the Alliance's mission to provide local governments with cutting
edge research, networking opportunities and customized educational opportunities.
