ACMA 2013 Winter Conference
By Kari Kent, Conference Co-Chair and Mesa Deputy City Manager
Winter 2013 Conference Planning Committee

Happy holidays to all ACMA members! As you prepare for the New Year, hopefully you are thinking about your role as local government leaders and taking advantage of professional development opportunities that lie ahead in 2013.

I cordially invite you to attend the ACMA 2013 Winter Conference: Creating The Future You Envision, which will be held at the Sedona Hilton February 6-8, 2013. Your Planning Committee has put together diverse session topics to ensure an interesting and meaningful conference. We are bringing back from the summer conference, Rapid Fire Innovation, in which Arizona local government leaders will briefly showcase innovative programs in the areas of technology, healthcare, economic development and strategic planning. For those of you who weren't able to attend the ICMA 2012 Conference in Phoenix/Maricopa County, you missed a wonderful keynote address by Jim Collins, author of "Great By Choice and Good To Great." As a follow-up to this presentation, two Arizona city managers will lead a discussion regarding Collins' new book "Great By Choice" and will describe the three leadership behaviors that distinguish successful leaders and the importance of a "20-Mile March," as well as how these managers have applied these principles in their own careers. If you get the chance, read "Great By Choice" prior to the conference, as there will be opportunities to share your thoughts.

Other session highlights include: The economic and community impact of early childhood learning, an Arizona economic update, an interactive speed coaching session, maintaining civility in uncivil times, and a look at Arizona's future through demographics, transportation and economic development.

The annual recognition and awards ceremony will also take place at the winter conference, which will recognize outstanding achievements by Arizona local government professionals. I hope you are able to join us in Sedona as we honor leaders in our profession and work together to provide improved professional management in our communities.
