Andrews Fellowship Update
By George Pettit, ACMA Life Member and ASU Professor of Practice

This is always a busy time for the Fellowship. We are graduating three new fellows at the May 13, 2014 Convocation at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe. Justine Bruno, Alexis Ramirez and Alex Rivera will receive their Master of Public Administration. This will make the total alumni count 24 from seven classes. To date, 21 are still actively engaged in government, two are in private sector, and one is managing a family.

My thanks for the continued support of local governments in paying for and mentoring second year internships starting in August 2014. Matt Behunin will start an internship with Queen Creek; Jacob Meshke will be in Goodyear; and Dominic Papa will be in Casa Grande.

Thank you Kari Kent, Edith Baltierrez, Karen Thoreson, David Swindell and Nicole Boryczka for their service in screening the applicants and participating in the interviews for the fall 2014 cohort. As of this article, Yesenia Castaneda (BA Business UC Irvine 2013) and Tyler Goodman (BA Political Science BYU 2014) have accepted the fellowship. We are reviewing other fall 2014 MPA/MPP candidates to find a third, or potentially fourth Marvin. The donation by Grant Hamill and Stifel Nicolaus made it possible to have a fourth Marvin, however the applicant pool did not generate the quality of candidate to be successful as a Marvin.

I appreciate very much the ongoing support from the membership of ACMA. This fellowship was established in 2007 to develop the next generation of municipal leaders, and the partnership of ACMA, ASU, the Alliance for Innovation, and individual communities has provided the environment and educational opportunity to meet that challenge. Your continuing financial support is needed, so feel free to donate at any time here.
