Jeff Tyne, Deputy City Manager, City of Peoria

Where are you originally from?
Newport Beach, California. I lived in the pre-"reality show" era of Orange County. Before VW wagons were replaced by Porsches, and burger joints by bistros.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in local government?
Looking back, I guess there were clues all along. Since I was young, I've been fascinated with history-those moments and decisions which alter entire societies! Around the dinner table, conversation often migrated toward the political issues of the day. And my parents' background, in the education and non-profit fields, likely spurred a drive to perform socially meaningful work.

What do you like most about your job?
Throughout the day, I interact with so many exceptional people: colleagues, stakeholders, citizens. New topics emerge, and old subjects evolve. But more often than not, these exchanges allow me to reason globally, and to grow personally. That's cool.

What areas of local government interest you the most?
Jeez, I don't know. That's like asking "which child is your favorite?" It's safe to say I prefer involvement on community "force multipliers" - building a splash pad in an established part of town, helping entice a targeted industry, watching a police neighborhood program take off.

As a local government professional, what accomplishments are you most proud of?
From time to time I'm asked to help jumpstart a campaign. The projects I'm most proud of were championing a comprehensive youth master plan, assuming negotiating roles with key partners and helping spearhead public funding initiatives.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Someone a long time ago said "Anyone can hold the helm when the sea is calm." My role models seem to steer through their storms with an abundance of preparation, flexibility, and grace.
