International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Voluntary Credentialing Program
Bryant Powell, Assistant City Manager, City of Apache Junction

As a professional in local government for 16 years, it is important to continue to pursue top quality education and progressive information regarding all facets of what it takes to be an effective and productive leader for the community in which I work, play and live. This year I was awarded the opportunity to participate in the ICMA Credentialed Manager Program which allowed me to gain several perspectives on the type of leader that I have emerged into and identified not only my strengths, but also areas where there was room for improvement.

From the program eligibility review, applied knowledge assessment, and online application process, to the completion and designation of the credentialing, the program was user-friendly to navigate. The mentoring from colleagues was priceless. The program is very reasonably priced in comparison to credentialing other professionals are required to partake in.

The steps included involved in the credentialing included:

  1. A self-assessment of my professional skills and abilities
  2. Establishment of a development plan with specific goals for areas of improvement, including 40 hours of training, and detailed written reports to ICMA on how I accomplished the goals set forth
  3. Written test with multiple choice questions
  4. Obtaining the recommendation of the credentialed advisory board consisting of other local government professionals from across the United States

Moving forward, the steps to retaining the credentialed designation include:

  1. 40 hours of continuing education annually
  2. Evaluation by colleagues every five years in order to learn new things, and continued improvement in areas identified

Being the first city official in the City of Apache Junction to obtain the ICMA Credentialed Manager designation, in joining the 40 other credentialed managers in Arizona and the 1,300 worldwide, is not only an honor but will benefit the community I serve for years to come. I encourage all eligible city and county professionals to look into the ICMA Credentialed Manager Program by visiting the ICMA website.
