Crystal Prentice
City Manager, City of Page, AZ

Name, title & city/town
J. Crystal Prentice, City Manager, Page, AZ

Where are you originally from?
Eden Prairie, Minnesota

Why did you decide to pursue a career in local government?
I was working for the community action program in Mesa and was working closely with staff from the City of Mesa Neighborhood Outreach Office. I was impressed with what they were accomplishing in Mesa neighborhoods and wanted to be a part of that effort.

What do you like most about your job?
The aspects of my job I enjoy most are working with staff, elected officials and members of the community to develop approaches to common challenges; and working with the City Council and staff to develop strategic goals that provide a framework for effective policy development.

What areas of local government interest you the most?
I enjoy policy facilitation and the complexity of capital planning and budgeting.

As a local government professional, what accomplishments are you most proud of?
There are two projects that stand out. As the city manager in Waseca, I initiated an adaptive reuse project of an existing retail building to a Public Safety Center; and secured 40% of project costs through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) stimulus funds and state grants for a Wastewater Treatment Plant and Conveyance System expansion, which incorporated improved flow capacity, second generation ATAD sludge process with nitrogen treatment, and critical replacement and rehabilitation.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
"Follow your own advice."
