Arizona Performance Consortium Receiving National Attention
The Valley Benchmark Cities group began in October 2011 as a consortium of staff from the 11 largest cities in the Phoenix metropolitan area: Avondale, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Goodyear, Mesa, Peoria, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Surprise, and Tempe. The group has been working with the Alliance for Innovation, the Center for Urban Innovation at Arizona State University, and the International City/County Management Association to improve local government performance.

The Valley Benchmark Cities group tracks demographic, financial, and performance data to enhance reporting and understanding, uncovers best practices, and collaborates on new approaches to service delivery. A report was issued in September by the group, and is available on the Center for Urban Innovation website. The group presented at an educational session at the ICMA Conference in Seattle and will be featured in the December issue of ICMA's Public Management magazine. Conference presenters were Wynette Reed, Deputy City Manager, City of Goodyear; Brent Stockwell, Assistant City Manager, City of Scottsdale; David Swindell, Director of Center for Urban Innovation, Arizona State University; and Karen Thoreson, President/Chief Operating Officer, Alliance for Innovation. Contact Brent Stockwell at 480-312-7288 or Karen Thoreson at 602-496-1100 for more information.
