Name, title & city/town
Vickie Hathaway, Assistant to the Town Manager, Town of Marana

Where are you originally from?
I was raised in Tucson, Arizona.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in local government?
I went to school for public administration knowing I wanted a career that would place me at the forefront of community service. I originally thought my path would lead toward non-profit work until I took a class in local government. I was immediately attracted to the variety of services offered and the positive impact a municipality can have on its community, and I pursued an internship with the Town of Marana to learn more. That internship has since turned into a career path and I couldn't be happier that I made the choice to work in local government.

What do you like most about your job?
Marana is a wonderful place to work that encourages innovative thinking. Because we are a growing community, I have the opportunity to work on projects that address long-term stability, strategic growth, and building strong community relations with residents and businesses. I work as part of a dynamic team that shares the common goal of community service, and it is great to come to work every day to that energy and excitement.

What areas of local government interest you the most?
I am most interested in people. I like to develop programs that focus on outreach and citizen engagement. Through conversation and collective efforts, the town can focus on services that improve quality of life in the community that will then attract more businesses and residents. Because of this, I gravitate toward marketing, communication, events, and customer service, as well as developing programs that address education and business opportunities. I am also very interested in the technical side of local government and our digital presence, and I've pursued projects that streamline procedures and increase accessibility for our residents and business owners.

As a local government professional, what accomplishments are you most proud of?
I enjoy taking on challenging projects that require creative thinking and problem solving. Taking our town signature events to the next level in organization and marketing has been a significant accomplishment that resulted in increased attendance and positive impacts on tourism. The town's website has also gone through a redesign with the goal of improving communication and customer service. This in-house project is just the beginning of evaluating how the town provides services and communicates with their residents and business owners, and can serve as a gateway for future projects and initiatives that will continue to increase the quality of life in Marana.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Don't be afraid to ask questions, and always lead by example.
