ACMA Member Profile - Arlethe G. Rios, Clerk of the Board, Cochise County
Where are you originally from?
I was born in Mexico and raised in Douglas, AZ.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in local government?
After serving in the Army, I wanted to continue my career and focus on public service. Serving my country was an honor and I wanted the opportunity to be able to serve my community in the same way.

What do you like most about your job?
What I like most about my job is knowing that I am creating and maintaining historical records. While working on the Legacy Project, I realized that transcribing minutes, while a tedious task, is critical to preserve our history and allow future generations to understand our present-day issues.

What area of local government interests you the most?
Working in the Board of Supervisors’ Office has given me an opportunity to get to know what other departments do really well. Although I find all services interesting, I find that the board of supervisors and county administration are the most diverse. This office deals with all county issues, which makes every day exciting.

As a local government professional what accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am very proud of the County’s Legacy Project. This project began in 2015 to highlight county services for the public and it has been a great learning experience. I am also very proud of being part of the county’s budget committee, it is a great opportunity to sit around the table and not only discuss issues, but solutions to better serve our citizens.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
I’ve been lucky to have many inspiring people in my life, so there are several pieces of advice I try to follow. My mother always told me to be self-reliant and not make excuses. The Army taught me to “lead by example,” so I never ask anyone to do anything that I have not already done myself or am willing to do.
