ACMA President's Message
By Nicole Lance, ACMA President

Ahh…. I just love that "new year" smell, don't you? So many possibilities, so many opportunities, and so many amazing things to reflect on from the previous year to set us in a positive direction for 2017.

Your ACMA Board was busy in 2016! As you know (since I am sure each one of you has read and memorized our ACMA Strategic Plan…. but in case you need a refresher, you can find it here), we currently have five Key Result Areas (KRAs) that help guide our focus as an organization: Public Education, Higher Education Partnerships, Professional Development and Future Leadership, Member Communication and Involvement, and Financial Sustainability.

Additionally, the board identified Action Priorities for 2016 which outlined targeted initiatives for the year to advance strategic priorities in the KRAs. I am proud to say that we advanced each category of our strategic plan! Some notable highlights from the past year include:

  • the successful Next Generation Conference which continued to see high attendance numbers in its third year
  • additional and ongoing relationship building with both the U of A and ASU
  • review and adjustment of sponsor package options resulting in increased sponsorships and enhanced partnerships
  • partnership with Arizona Women Leading Government for successful summer kick-off event
  • drafting and implementation of fund balance policy to help guide ACMA finances

Although the work the board does to advance the strategic objectives of ACMA is important not just to continuing to support professional local government management here in Arizona, it is the work of each of our members and our sponsors as partners in these efforts that is the most critically important. The opportunity to serve our communities as local government professionals, to engage with citizens at a grassroots level, and to bring forward critical conversations paired with strategic application of resources is indeed a noble profession and courageous calling. For our partners and sponsors, the opportunity to join forces to support professional local government management and innovation in serving our communities is both exciting and rewarding! Thank you for joining us in this call to service.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve alongside you in this adventure this past year- may 2017 be full of more laughter and joy than you thought possible!
